Following emergency repairs on the gas main in Church Road, Portsmouth, a decision has been made to replace the old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes to provide a permanent solution to address ongoing gas escapes.
Replacement work began on Monday 11 November and is expected to be completed on Friday 17 January.
We’re replacing the gas main on Church Road from the junction of Foster Road to the junction of Fratton Road.
Due to the location of the old gas pipes in the road and for everyone's safety, we will need to temporarily close Church Road. This closure will mean no through vehicle access along Church Road in either direction - a signed diversion route will be in place.
To help minimise disruption for residents, we’ve planned these works in two phases, as follows:
Phase one - working between the junctions of Foster Road and Clarendon Street.
Once we’ve completed this section, work will move to:
Phase two - working between the junctions of Clarendon Street to Fratton Road
From Friday 20 December to Friday 3 January, works will be removed from the site and road closure will be lifted where possible to minimise disruption.
Important information
- Bus routes may be affected – passengers should contact their service provider for updates/changes to their bus service as a result of this closure.
- Bin collection days will remain unchanged unless advised otherwise by your provider.
We appreciate how disruptive the ongoing works on Church Road have been for the community. By completing this replacement we can reduce the risk of future leaks and disruptive emergency repairs on this section of gas main in the future.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience we may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding.
