Craiglockhart Area, Edinburgh

24 October - UPDATE

We understand commuters are experiencing disruption and long delays in the area as a result of our critical upgrade work.

We've listened to feedback, and to help improve the situation, we are implementing a northbound road closure in Craiglockhart Avenue from Saturday 26 October.

This means, there will be no access to Lanark Road from Craiglockhart Avenue.

This allows us to replace the current three-way temporary traffic lights with two-way lights, which will reduce delays.

These changes also mean we can begin work on phase three of our project ahead of schedule.

We're replacing our old metal gas mains and services with new plastic pipes, in the Lanark Road and Craiglockhart areas of Edinburgh.

This work is essential to make sure that you, your neighbours, and businesses, continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.

Our contractor George Ritchie will be carrying out this project on our behalf.

After close collaboration with local authorities, our project will begin Monday 14 October, and it should be finished in around 18 weeks.

We know this is a busy area and have taken that into consideration during the planning of this critical project.

We're carrying out this project now due to the council's plans to resurface sections of Lanark Road. This particular location has experienced multiple gas leaks in recent years and by upgrading our pipes now, we can prevent future emergency work and disruption.

Our project will begin in the Craiglockhart area. This section should take 12 weeks to complete. We'll then move into the Lanark Road section after the New Year for approximately 6 weeks.

We advise motorists to plan ahead and allow more time for journeys, especially during peak travel times.

To help ease disruption as much as possible, our work has been split into phases, shown on the maps below.

Phase one

Our project will begin in Redhall House Drive. Craiglockhart Drive South will be closed for the one-week duration of this phase.

Phase 2

During the second phase of our project, which will take approximately three weeks to complete, we require three-way temporary traffic lights on Lanark Road at its junction with Craiglockhart Avenue.

Phase 3

Craiglockhart Avenue will become a one-way system during phase three of our project. This means traffic will be unable to travel northbound on the road and will be required to follow the signed diversion route via Ashley Terrace for approximately 4 weeks. Bus routes 4 & 36 will also be diverted during this phase.

Phase 4

Four-way Lights will be in place on Colinton Road and its junction with Craiglockhart Avenue for approximately two weeks during phase four.

Phase 5

For the two-week duration of our final phase, lane closures will be in place along Colinton Road as our work progresses. Temporary bus stops will be in place when required.
