Young adults living with special needs in Sidcup have been learning about gas safety and the dangers around roadworks sites through sessions coordinated by SGN, Thames Water and the Mayor of London’s Infrastructure Coordination team.
The visit was designed to give students at Marlborough School an understanding of the importance of safety, including crossing the road near to an active collaborative site managed by SGN and Thames Water, plus how to report a suspected gas leak.
We worked with the school to ensure the programme would be suitable for all students. A simple presentation with pictures and special signage was used to showcase the scenarios in a way that was inclusive for all levels of understanding.
Students were then treated to a demonstration of a mock work site in the school’s playground. They wore hi-vis jackets and hard hats while investigating the site.
Anna Rowell, Infrastructure Programme Manager, said: “It was a privilege to be welcomed to the school to engage with the students on key topics around safety. SGN and Thames Water representatives created an interactive session involving the students identifying gas and water pipes with a dummy environment on the school grounds. The collaboration between the two utility companies helped make the morning a success!”
Marlborough School Assistant Headteacher Candice Smith said: “Our students now have more of an awareness of the safety clothing worn by SGN and Thames Water, as well as the experience of being close to a site and knowing that it is not safe.”
