A partnership between SGN and IncomeMax, an organisation that helps people access the benefits, grants and schemes they deserve, is starting to make a real difference in the communities served by the energy network operator.

In its first month, the collaboration, which went live in February, supported 30 households, identifying an incredible £80,698.20 in extra income — an average of £2,988.82 per household.

IncomeMax is a recognised expert in supporting vulnerable households through income maximisation and benefits advice. Their team of human advisers has helped thousands of individuals unlock vital financial support.

The initiative is part of our wider work with our partners to support vulnerable customers to use energy safely, efficiently and affordably.

SGN Customer Experience Performance Officer Shelley Smith said: “Our frontline colleagues often see customers facing financial difficulties, such as not having basic household items, living in poorly maintained homes, or expressing worries and needing extra help, especially if their gas has been cut off.

“Many of these customers were struggling with energy debt, rent, or council tax but didn’t realise they could get financial help. That’s why our partnership with IncomeMax is so important. The referrals really help people."

One of the first referrals came from Epsom-based First Call Operative Paul Collins, pictured, who quickly identified his customers Mr & Mrs S needed extra support.

Paul’s customers were both pensioners and unpaid carers for their disabled son – they also both live with health conditions.

Paul made a referral for Mr & Mrs S who are now being supported by IncomeMax who have identified they are entitled to:

•    £108.44 per week in Housing Benefit
•    £72.65 per week in Council Tax Support
•    Potential Attendance Allowance, opening the door to even more support

This, so far, is £9,416 extra annual income for Mr & Mrs S, thanks to Paul.

Karen Crotty, from IncomeMax who helped Mr & Mrs S, said: “It’s common for pension-age households to assume they aren’t entitled to financial help, even when they’re struggling. Mr & Mrs S have worked hard all their lives, and we want to make sure they received the support they’re eligible for. We’ll continue to assist them through the process.”
