Hannah Moseley-Brown, our Health & Safety Apprentice, has won Gas Industry Apprentice of the Year at the Energy & Utility Skills (EUS) annual awards.

Hannah joined us in October 2022 and has been recognised for making a swift impact by collaborating with our suppliers to introduce better fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) for our female colleagues.

Speaking after collecting her award at the ceremony in Birmingham on Tuesday 10 September, Hannah said: “I’m incredibly proud and still in disbelief. Winning this award was beyond my wildest dreams. The opportunities and support from everyone at SGN have been life-changing. I’m honoured to accept this award on behalf of SGN, as the apprenticeship programme truly deserves all the recognition. I’m also proud of my personal growth in skills and confidence over the past two years.”

Hannah's hard work has led to the introduction of a maternity range of PPE and she has begun a fit trial for a fire and electric shock-proof hijab. Hannah has also started important conversations about PPE for transgender colleagues and is working to ensure PPE is accessible to all races and genders.

EUS is the leading body that identifies and addresses the skills challenges our sector faces, with our CEO Mark Wild OBE appointed chair of the Energy & Utility Skills Partnership last year. Following her win, the EUS judges said: “Hannah’s journey is an inspiring story of dedication and hard work, not only in achieving her qualification but also in her role. She has been taking huge steps in inclusivity, working with suppliers on the critical issue of making sure women throughout our industry have better PPE for their job.”

Hannah was awarded a distinction for her external apprenticeship and has also been successfully working through an internal health and safety apprenticeship programme, learning about the engineering and procedures that go into maintaining a gas network.

Tracey McIntyre, Director of Operational Safety at SGN, said: “This is fantastic news and I'm really proud that Hannah has won Gas Industry Apprentice of the Year. Since joining us in 2022, Hannah's passion and enthusiasm for safety has shone through. She takes every opportunity to learn and develop in her apprenticeship, adding real value to the wider safety team. Please join me in congratulating Hannah in what is a very special moment for her.”
