If you're making home improvements or building a new property, it's really important to make sure any digging is done safely, just in case there's a pipe underneath.
We've made a checklist of what you need to think about before turning on your digger or getting your spade out and digging in your garden:
- All excavation work must follow HSE publication HSG47.
- Check linesearchbeforeudig.co.uk to find out the location of any pipes that are underground around your site.
- Our online service is not available in Northern Ireland, so you'll need to email us to check for pipework locations. We'll respond to your email within 15 working days.
What to do if you hit a pipe
If you or your builders have hit a gas pipe, call the National Gas Emergency Service 24 hours a day on 0800 111 999 immediately.
