How it started

Before joining SGN, I worked in travel, retail and hospitality. I was looking for a role offering the chance to earn more money and I started as a Dispatch Controller. I didn’t realise how many opportunities it would open up for me.

Shadowing

After 3 years, I began shadowing the First Call Operatives (FCOs) to get a better understanding of what they did and to help with my decision making in dispatch. My experience meant I could build relationships with different colleagues and team managers. It taught me how important it is to pull together as a team, especially when under pressure.

Making plans

I set my heart on a role as a First Call Operative. I was keen to be involved in engineer and have a closer relationship with customers, knowing that I could help someone when they really needed it. I successfully applied for a position as a trainee FCO – the first job I had where I gained qualifications and a purpose. My family are proud of my achievements, and I can join them in having a meaningful education.

Being an FCO has its challenges – I had to adapt to all the procedures and the working hours can affect your sleep pattern. But I did adapt, and I loved all the relationships I built in the team.

Inspiration

In my FCO interview, I was asked where I saw myself in five to ten years. It stuck with me and gave me the inspiration to think about my future in the industry.

I knew I had to increase my managerial experience – as well as my work at SGN, I worked with my parents in their business to get valuable experience to help me succeed.

An opportunity came along for a team manager position in the Southern Maintenance Projects Team – I’ve been in the role for a few months now and I love every minute of it. The performance mindset is a very positive experience.

Support and opportunities

SGN offer support and learning opportunities that have been amazing. The team work hard for each other and the support for my learning is fantastic. I couldn’t be happier.

My development has a long way to go, and I’m confident the team around me will make sure I succeed.
